RETREAT
Joseph grows in so many was. He has become a fully-grown man, although looks smaller than most. The early years of his journeys had an effect on his physical body. He was muscular because he spent much of his time walking, working odd jobs, etc….
But he also grew in the way he looked at people, how he felt about society, the way he cared for animals. He experienced many things, formed positive opinions about being unselfish, loving acts of kindness, life being sacred in any form.
As he got older, he spent seven to eight months at a time by himself in the wooded area that belonged to Ben. It was comfortable and safe. No one ever bothered him or hurt him while he was there. This was a place that helped him understand the courtroom, judgments, and his experience with Donovan.
As Joseph stretched out on a cot in his makeshift lean-to, he relaxed and fell sound asleep. So many things were being resolved in his mind, and he had spent much time preparing the area he lived. It seemed to constantly need his hand on something. But that was fine. He felt competent in his actions and was preparing the area to possibly live there even in the winter months.
As he slept, the Cloaked Beings were there, in a vision. They did not speak but huddled around him in a protective manner. Then they parted and he saw a young woman picking up a journal from the ground. It looked very well used and full of papers. The woman had a familiar look about her. But Joseph did not truly recognize her.
When he woke, he felt refreshed and thirsty. As he went to get some water to drink, he remembered the vision. Who was that woman? And what was the journal? It looked very similar to his journal. But why did she have it? These things did not get answered. And he continued with his chores.
Joseph spent much time in the sunshine. It had been his ally and guide for many of his early childhood years. That old friend was always constant and steady. Joseph patterned himself from that understanding: to be constant and steady.
The sun seemed to nurture him. There was a kind of energy derived from the sun’s rays, and he spent many hours gathering that energy.
He was used to only eating to survive. Most of his food came from scavenging the woods for green plants he learned about in books at the library. There were plenty in this area of the woods, and he felt pride in searching them, harvesting them, and cleaning them.
He usually ate the greens raw as he walked. After cleaning them in the nearby stream, he shook off the excess water and popped one plant in his mouth and continued to investigate the land fluctuations that keep marked records of seasonal change. He kept very precise notes on the developments in trees and plants, as well as the ground animals’ habits.
Occasionally, Joseph caught a squirrel or quail and slow cooked it over the open fire near his lean-to. And if there were any greens left from his gatherings, he placed them in a small cast iron pot that Ben gave him. The pot was purposefully placed just right, so the juices from his roasting catch would flavor them. This, to Joseph was a feast, and only done occasionally. This type of meal was very heavy compared to the normal foods he ate and made him feel sluggish and groggy. But he also knew that during the change of seasons, it was advantageous to his body’s metabolism to have extra calories and energy.
It was early Spring now, and he knew it was time to set about planning the vernal equinox feast. He would invite Ben over as usual to share this special occasion. He started gathering early dandelion greens before they budded into flowers. They were always very tasty and tender this time of the year.
The curly dock, which many people consider a nuisance, was up and looking fresh and tender. Early spring is the only time he ate the dock, since too much of it could strip the body of calcium. But the early leaves were high in Vitamin C. He carefully chose six or seven bunches, leaving much more for the deer that came by several times a week on their path through the area.
The wild onion grass and bittersweet were very flavorful now and would add a great crunch to the pot.
Johnny-jump-ups, day lily buds, and he would usually find some early wild strawberries. They are much smaller than the widely produced strawberries in farmer’s markets, but they were delicious and a welcome change to the greens.
Ben came in to Joseph’s camp early that day, and had a cleaned hen in a basket, and a live hen in his hand. The cleaned hen was stuffed with walnuts left over from his storehouse of winter goods. It went directly into the iron pot to start roasting. Joseph already had a small fire going and pulled the pot over it at the right distance of heat.
The other hen was a gift that keeps on giving. It was a wonderful source of egg protein that Joseph could enjoy on a regular basis.
This early-year meal celebration was special on several levels. Ben and Joseph had met around this time many years ago. So, the gift giving was special to that point. But both men had a distinct feeling about the vernal equinox.
This is the time of year that the sun crosses the equator toward the plane of the equator, which creates day and night of equal length. To many people it seems like such a little thing, but these two saw the spiritual meaning of this natural occurrence. The earth is coming out of hibernation along with the animals and plants. It signals the fresh beginnings and new starts.
Not only are the animals, plants and earth waking up, but the sun is dancing closer to the earth and warming everything that it shines on. Joseph, of course, had a special connection with the sun’s vibrations and warmth. But Ben, having close earth connections through his heritage also revered the sun for its special properties.
“Elements of air, fire, water and earth, remind us how to work in balance and harmony,” Ben said as they prepared their feast.
“Mother Earth comes into balance now. She has collected and cleared all the dead debris over winter months, using it as nourishment. Now the newness of Spring opens to a longer shadow allowing our spirit self to refresh. Sorrows of the Sleep-time are cleared, and we see new opportunities for Life.”
Joseph knows what Ben is saying and has heard it from him every Spring that they have known each other. It was part of their collective ritual and reunion and Ben will always share the same information. It was part of the passage into Spring. A welcome dissertation.
“Moving into the direction of the rising sun brings us into clear areas, banishing all that has plagued us in the past. And brings a new cycle of birth and growth.”
Joseph especially appreciated these last words that Ben had shared. It allowed Joseph to let go of the horrid events and attack in Wilkes-Barre Township.
