Over the years I have been connected to many people that have Empathic Insecurities. By that I mean they are empaths but may not know it. Or may not know what to do about it.
After a while, I began the realize that I too was Empathic. And that whole world became apparent to me! So now, I teach about it.
Feeling Other People’s Emotions as Your Own
Many grown folks these days (as well as children!) are empathic in one way or another. Being empathic means the ability to feel other people’s emotions as your own: you literally feel what other people are feeling. You may be aware of it, but usually people don’t know that they have this ability, and subsequently feel like the misery is all their own!
As an example, someone I've talked to has said she can sense the emotions of everyone around her, even the next-door neighbors. It comes like a scrambled radio station with bits and pieces from all those people. To help understand this concept, I list here different levels or types of empaths.
1. Non- Empaths. These are people that have shut down their empath skills so completely that over time, they can completely lose their empath abilities. These could be children that feel such pain, that they close it down on purpose and become numb to emotions.
2. Impaired Empaths. These people have managed to use very basic filters. But they can easily get overwhelmed. A crowded event or emotional turmoil of some kind can throw them over the edge. Sometimes they can experience emotional distress, such as feeling the weight of the world. Or they take on physical symptoms, such as exhaustion, headaches, or depression.
3. Functional Empaths. People that are functional empaths are able to control the ability. They are aware of the flow of information, keep it under control and are able to work comfortably with it.
4. Trained (or Professional) Empaths. These people usually are able to use their abilities to interpret complex emotional information. They can access this information to assist clients in counseling or healing work. When empaths take on the impact of stressful emotions, they may feel swallowed up by it. This can trigger panic attacks, depression, food, and drug binges. Not just emotional, but physical symptoms can emerge, including fatigue and exhaustion.
You may find yourself in one of these categories. But do not fear. There are ways to address the situation after you finally recognize what is going on. Here are some ways to help and deal with the feelings as they come to you.
Dealing with Empathic Feelings
Do you always feel badly when you are around a group of people? Do you seem to have physical symptoms that you didn’t think are yours? Do you have problems with depression, or mood swings? Then you could be empathic.
Here are some ways become centered, so you do not feel like you have to handle the world’s problems. Empathy can help you feel freer to be compassionate, vital and witness miracles. Here are a few practices to ground and center yourself.
• Use quiet time to emotionally relax. Take regular mini breaks during your day to stay calm. Breathe in fresh air. Stretch. Feel yourself in your own body.
• Use mini meditations. Meditate for a few minutes. It keeps your energy centered and grounded so others’ emotions don’t get caught in your energy field.
• Understand and honor your empathic needs. Know when to say “no.” No excuses needed.
• Socialize if you want, only in small ways. Find quiet spaces to take a break if you need to.
• Don’t go into a big crowd or large events. If you really want to be there, stay off to the side, and know when to take a break to breathe and relax. (I use the restroom for that.)
The ultimate thing to remember is that you are always in control. When a feeling or emotion comes over you unexpectedly, ask yourself if it belongs to you. "Is this my own feeling?" You will get a sense of yes or no. Then ask yourself if it belongs to someone else. You will know immediately if it does. Then you can shake or dust the feeling away from yourself and intend it to go back to where it came.

YIN/YANG Question and Answer Forum
Q/ Why is it that every time I sit down for meditation, my mind starts thinking of so many things, it’s impossible to sit still?
A/ Join the club! Seriously, it means you probably are not prepping for meditation. We work best in life if we have ritual or customs. Just like going to bed. You don’t just jump in the bed. First, you may pick out your clothes for the next day, brush your teeth, shower, get a glass of water for the nightstand, etc. You know, the usual things that get you ready, sometimes even doing them in a certain order. Same goes for meditation. Choose your time wisely, your place should be the same every time. Turn off the electronic devices, calmly start slowly breathing and adjusting your position. Done on a regular basis, you will create an environment for your mind to settle and allow a few minutes of peace. Thanks for the question.
Every Tuesday, this space is for you to ask me questions about your world, how you develop your spiritual practice, meditation, psychic hits you may have had, questions about… (you name it!) The next week, I’ll address the answers to those questions in this Yin/Yang Forum!
