I’ve come across a few things that keep ending up in a cool facts pile. So, I thought I’d pull it all together and share it with you. It really is not related to each other, but just cool topics. Hope you enjoy!
From the Mouth of the Dead
The top 10 things dead people want to tell living people, Ene Katrin October 21, 2014, are:
1. They're not dead.
2. They're sorry for any pain they caused.
3. There's no such thing as a devil or hell.
4. They were ready to go when they went.
5. You're not ready.
6. They finally understand what they were missing.
7. Nothing can prepare you for the beauty of the moment you arrive.
8. Don't try to understand this now, but life is exceedingly fair.
9. Your pets are as crazy, brilliant and loving, here, as they were there.
10. Life really is all about love, but not just loving those who love you...
In their own words, The Universe
Cultural Thoughts on Jumping the Broom (of Destiny) Weddings, by Georgia Clyde Martin of Melungeon decent.
I didn't know wiccans jumped the broom too, I'm learning it's pretty common in a lot of cultures for different reasons! For Melungeons, it really ties together our folklore with our history. Brooms are a spiritual item, you use them to sweep out the old, negativity, etc so it symbolizes sweeping away the past and coming together as one. Historically, illegal marriages were called broomstick weddings, and Melungeons were often restricted from marrying under the thumb of the laws like the Racial Integrity Act and the one drop rule, that restricted all African Americans and those with African American Ancestors, jumping the broom was a way to symbolize jumping over those broomstick restrictions, and marrying who you love regardless of what the law said. ( We are obviously legally allowed to marry now, but the tradition never faded out lol)
What is Melungeon?
"The question always holds the same meaning, but somehow I still never know the answer to give. They want to know why my skin matches the ridgeline, ochre like the soil that paints these hills. Why my curls resemble cherry cola, and my eyes are like coal, but my brother, he’s blonde and his eyes match the sky.
So how do I say that to me being Melungeon is when home is in the holler or runnin barefoot on the ridge? It’s bonfires that make the mountains glow like fireflies in the night, and dancing while the world ends; but sometimes it is asking gravestones for guidance in my hardest days because I know more ancestors than I do saints. How do I explain that being Melungeon is throwing your troubles in the river and screaming at the moon? That its finding grace in the sound the green frog makes, because it plucks just like the banjo. Its my memories of corn pone and shuckey beans and sweeping haints away. Its finding comfort in the smell of sweetfern floating over fresh pine, bacon grease on the back porch, and moonshine in a barrel. How will they understand that being Melungeon feels a lot like floating through space on my own piece of red dirt and cornflowers? How do I tell them that being Melungeon comes from my soul and not from my face?"
