(I’ve gotten to a space in my writing where I know what I want but am having trouble putting it on paper. Be patient with me. 😘 This chapter will be expanded at some point.)
A PERMENANT CABIN
Joseph started building a small herbal cupboard in his cabin. The well-used lean-to that he made several years earlier was his regular place to stay. He enjoyed being in nature and sleeping on Mother Earth. His needs were very few and everything he needed as a rule was right there.
But over the years, he realized he needed a more permanent dwelling. Something that could protect him from the colder, harsher elements. Mostly during the winter months, but sometimes when there were strong winds and storms.
Over time, he had started gathering wood and stone from various locations. Sometimes he gleaned leftover brick or 2x4’s of wood from different farmers or store owners. Occasionally, he bartered his skills in odd jobs for unwanted scrapes he found in the back of storage areas or supply houses.
Once he had gathered a reasonable number of supplies, he saw in his mind’s eye the best way to build his necessary cabin. And over two-three months, he had prepared an adequate building with a sturdy floor and windows.
Joseph realized this would be an excellent place to keep the herbs and other plants he wanted to dry. They would be away from the smaller animals that wanted to nibble on them. So, he used the rafters to hang the plants and such to dry, and then placed them in containers on shelves and in cupboards.
The vernal equinox was celebrated between Joseph and Ben every year. And each one was a fresh new start, a new beginning. It stabilized his soul into a position where it could be renewed. It opened an opportunity to forgive himself for past mistakes and have courage to take on another endeavor.
Several years had gone by since Joseph had built his newer cabin. He took his time and enjoyed his life in the wooded area that Ben provided. But Joesph’s thoughts always came back to Donovan and his fate. He knew there was something he must do for him, but still had not come up with the idea. Instead of being frustrated, he allowed himself to go back into the book that his friend, Marisa gave him by Magna Christophers. He always gained wisdom and power from her teachings.
Spring was in full bloom by now, and Joseph looked for all the signs that showed themselves at this time of year. The most obvious one was a returning Wren. He was sure it was the same one, because he always hopped around the yard for several hours – in a way to get Joseph’s attention.
Then the bird flew up to his cabin window and pecked on the glass. Joseph felt as if this was a sign that a special ancestor spirit was checking in on him. In any event, that Wren (and the Legend he learned from Ben many years earlier) was always a welcome sight.
Even though it seemed still too soon to plant, Joseph took this time to plan his early Spring Garden. Red clover and chicory were at the top of his list. He always dried it and kept it in a loose, mesh sack to dry. So, he can have a hot drink when the weather got cold.

Unknown to Joseph, Donovan became interested in plants and gardening. He borrowed books from the prison library and planned a garden for early Spring.
Being on death row he was not allowed to spend much time outside or work in a garden. But he talked to other prisoners that were interested in planting. He drew out the plans and made lists for them to have family members send seeds for the project.
While Donavon is in prison, his wife sends him boxes of food and personal items. He asked her not to visit him there. He wanted to spare her from as much misery and negative treatment by the prison population (guards and inmates) as possible.
Sometime after Joseph left his cabin, a wind and storm rush through and turns many things over. One thing was his book by Magna. He found it on the floor when he returned. It was not damaged, but it gets him to thinking.
The next week, Donovan received a package in the mail. He thought it was from his wife, but there was no return address. He opened it and it was the book written by Magna Christophers. No note. He did not know where it came from.
Joseph had read the book so many times, he knew that Donovan would really get a lot out of it.
The book helped Donovan deal with his circumstance. After reading the whole book, he decided to take a vow of silence.

SPIRITUAL TEACHINGS
Joseph wanders into a sermon at a spiritualist camp (northern Penn. Place called Silver Bells Spiritualist Camp)
The guest speaker that day was Magna Christophers. She rarely gave any personal appearances anymore. Joseph realized it was important to stay and hear her presentation. Watching her prepare before the meeting, he realized she was much older than he had thought.
“She must be close to 90 or so,” he imagined. Her movements were very slow and deliberate. There was no unnecessary walking or action. “She must be conserving her energy.” Joseph wished his dear friend Mrs. Gardner was with him. She enjoyed Ms. Christophers’ teaching so. But he would take very meticulous notes and tell her all about this lecture.
