A Mystical Look at the Nature of Wind
It has been said that humans are the caretakers of the animals and plants on Earth. But I know that we humans are one with the animals. We are one with the plants. We are one with the earth. To recognize the simplicity and wonder of nature is to have reverence for Life and Self.
Wind is such a STRONG element in our world. I have always been intrigued by wind. Especially just before a storm. As a child I ran out of the house if a storm was looming. And I’d run around the house, back and forth, in circles. I could feel the wild! I could feel the strength and think I might run forever if the wind never stopped.
That might be one reason I love Autumn so much. The wind gusts and falling leaves will swirl. That crisp feeling in the air wakes me up. It has such a familiar feel to me. I must be akin in some way. But aren’t we all kin to Mother’s Elements?
Different cultures have personified The Wind. Indigenous groups have spiritualized it, making it a Symbol of Life. They all pointed to understanding Wind in non-physical ways, giving strength and meaning to our world.
Nature of Wind
Many thousands of years ago, an Ancient One needed an answer to a certain problem. (Some may call this individual Shaman, but I call them Ancient One) To find the answer he had to climb the highest cliff he could find. When he finally got to the top, he sat down. There was a large body of water below him, and the wide, expansive sky above. He continued to sit. Waiting. Eventually a strong wind came up. The wind blew for an exceptionally long time. Ancient One did not try to feel the wind. He did not try to see the wind. He merely sat and became the wind. Ancient one was the wind for a very long time. When the wind subsided, Ancient One stood up, climbed down the cliff and went back to his abode. He then knew the answer to the problem.
I shall dance in the forest...
The wind shall make
A tune for my feet...
Now I raise my foot and knee;
And spurn the ground; and leap; and see
The sky like a scarf to strain to, touch,
Feel, and be part of, and claim, and clutch,
And wave in my dance! It is a fine
Silken scarf, and it is mine!
It is made for my dance!
Wind! Louder! Faster!
Be confusion! Be disaster!...
So I dance! Wind, sing, sing!
Louder, wilder, faster fling
Down your music!...
~Mary Carolyn Davies, "Forest Dance," Youth Riding, 1919
I’ve spent time meditating and communing with Wind over the years and been much more involved with Nature. I can’t verbalize the feeling, really. But there is power and will and knowledge. There is an intelligence to it. Wind knows its own nature. And even though Wind can be very destructive, it also has a calming element to it.
The movie “Phenomenon” with John Travolta, shows how the gentle winds move the trees and calms a troubled man.
I don’t pretend to understand scientific or meteorological teachings of how and why Wind is. But the mystical (maybe magical) recognition of it I will share with you.
Wind's unpredictability and potential to shape the environment contribute to its symbolic power and how it challenges understanding.
Wind in its original form is Air. Humans, Animals, Plants and our Stone Relatives all influence the Air. As we collectively move, interact in life, eat, dig, decompose – these actions have an effect on Air. It slowly moves and undulates. The surface of the earth has rolling hills, tall steep mountains, jagged ridges, caves, and oceans. This topography makes the air push and pull in different motions.
It seems so simple, but over time Air flows in patterns and back-and-forth, until it takes on the movement for itself. It understands its own energy. That knowledge manifests in third dimension.
We witness it when the storms start to brew. Or a gentle breeze blows the leaves on the tree, or the hair in your face. It cools your body. You can feel the energy of it.
There is purifying and uplifting potency in the winds.
I know that Wind is a marvelous thing. It affects the physical world and our inner lives, stirring emotions and perceptions. It makes us alive!

While learning Hulu in Kauai, I learned so many deep Hawaiian culture... one was that there are over 250 individual names for Wind, as the pertain to location and types. Hawaiians chant and communicate to the consciousness of each type. Then I experienced it in a sacred dedication ceremony for the Hanalei river..
Wind is ... no words..
Your feelings about the wind are interesting. I am frightened by the wind. It's pretty much the thing that will wake me from a deep sleep. High wind wakes me jolt upright whereas I have been known to sleep through alarms and even a pneumatic drill. Stormy nights = no sleep for me 😕
