Life has so many ups and downs, miseries and elations, grief and joy. Most of us have miseries. in our lives of one kind or another. As a result happiness and even joy can be very elusive. Even though joy does not always show itself easily, contentment does appear from time to time.
The more we can maintain a level of contentment, dealing with life’s challenges then becomes do-able. But there are many ways to cope, if you will – or to bring a stable feeling to your world, if even for a moment at a time. Let me share a few I have found, and recommend as various ways of contentment.
Follow Your Bliss
"If you follow your bliss, you put yourself on a kind of track that has been there all the while, waiting for you, and the life that you ought to be living is the one you are living." —Joseph Campbell.
Always have a bliss-goal on your mind. It might be an unbelievable dream. It could be just the next step in your job search. It could be planning for a mini-vacation next year. There must be something on your mind that brings a smile to your face, something to look forward to.
There is significant information that would suggest that those few moments of bliss thought and planning will lift your vibrations. The more you can do that, even if it is a pipeline dream, can make a difference in your life.
In her book, Excuse Me, Your Life is Waiting, Lyn Grabhorn tells that if you can hold a happy, blissful, exciting thought for as little as 16 seconds, then you really shift your energy field into that high frequency.
Go ahead, try it now. If you cannot bring a forward thinking bliss, then remember a time in your life that brought you pure joy. Now… hold it, think on it, for 16 seconds!
Live in the Moment
There are only two days in the year that nothing can be done. One is called yesterday and the other is called tomorrow. Today is the right day to love, believe, do, and mostly live. ~~Dalai Lama XIV
Have you ever said anything similar to these statements: “I’ll be glad when I finally finish my work,” “I’ll be happy when all this is behind me,” or “I sure will be happy when this school year is over.”
Well, if you have said anything like that before, then you were denying the contentment that was available at the moment. You were pushing it away. You were not really living, but constantly looking to the future for your happiness. The truth is that the future is never really there, only now. By only looking to the future, you are creating a perfected scenario in your mind as to what you think happiness and contentment will look like. But you are not enjoying it now!
“Living” is a present tense word. Living is something that is done in the moment – right now. To live is only something for the present, not the past or the future.
Natural “Earthing” Technique
“And forget not that the earth delights to feel your bare feet…” ― Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet
'Earthing' is a way of using the Earth's natural energy for its healing properties. Grounding yourself is one of the best ways to cope with sensitivity. When you touch the ground with your bare skin or feet, antioxidant electrons flow through your body. This clears away stress and inflammation caused by constantly taking on the energy of others. It is an excellent way to clear empathic perceptions.
It is so natural and simple. By grounding yourself, your entire body readjusts to a new level of functioning. Since the body is mostly water and minerals, it is a good conductor of electricity (electrons). The free electrons on the surface of the Earth are easily transferred to the human body as long as there is direct contact.
Take a moment (even if it's cold outside) to touch the Earth today! You will receive more energy, better sleep, and a calmer nervous system. And your feet will tingle!
The State of Ease
“Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.” ~Mahatma Gandhi
By being in a state of ease, described by Doc Childre (founder of HeartMath®), you’re not trying to fix an emotion; the ease-state helps to lessen the significance within the emotion so you can discern it in an objective way. This reduces stress and inspires creative and practical solutions for adjusting to situations.
Practicing inner-ease increases conscious memory to include your heart, as you navigate through daily choices and emotions to decide the quality and direction of our life. Inner-ease is like aquiet doorway into the moment.
Try this Inner-Ease Technique when experiencing stress:
1. If you are stressed, acknowledge your feelings as soon as you sense that you are sensing frustration, impatience, anxiety, overload, anger, being judgmental, etc.
2. Take a moment and do heart-focused breathing: breathe a little slower than usual; pretend you are breathing through your heart area. This helps create coherent wave patterns in your heart rhythm, restoring balance and calm in your mental and emotional nature while activating the affirming power of your heart.
3. Imagine with each breath that you are bringing in a feeling of inner-ease and filling your mental and emotional nature with love and balance. Radiating love activates beneficial hormones and inner balance.
4. As you become calmer, affirm with a heartfelt commitment that you want to anchor and maintain the state of ease as you re-engage in your daily projects and challenges.

Affirmation: I receive goodness and contentment with every breath that I take.
