How I Became a Conduit of Love
When I was in ICU at Ohio State University Heart Hospital, and consequently on to Dodd’s Rehabilitation Hospital, I met a sweet-hearted young Personal Assistant that helped me every day to move, get dressed, eat and only Spirit knows the whole of it. Her name was Ama.
I was so impressed with her humble manner and full-knowledge of what to do, how to assist me and always beamed with Light coming from her smile.
We were talking one day, and I mentioned a world known healer named Amma. And asked if she was named in honor of her. No, she said, she did not know of that person. I gave her a quick description since it was difficult for me to talk much or very long. And told her the spelling, and to research this wonderful woman. I told Ama that she reminded me of the spiritual Amma and considered it a compliment.
She said she would. I did not get to see her anymore, since I was headed home a few days later. I hope she looked up Amma. (But I do consider Ama being named in honor of Amma.)
I found out about Amma in a beautiful way. My husband’s aunt, Aunt Bertha called us one day over 20 years ago. She asked if we could drive her to Ann Arbor, Michigan, because she wanted to go to a special event.
Of course. We would do anything for Aunt Bertha. But wanted to know what the event was. She said a highly spiritual woman from India was visiting the USA and was holding an event in Ann Arbor. Aunt Bertha wanted to go, pay honor to her and receive a special hug from her.
After talking to Aunt Bertha, we realized that Amma was a spiritual healer. The way she transmitted healing from the Divine was through hugs. She said we could even have her hold a cloth and it would be imbued with healing energy.
“When I embrace people, it is not just physical contact taking place. The love I feel towards all the creation flows towards each person.” ~ Amma
Amma’s embrace, known as her darshan, is how Amma welcomes all those who come to her. During this hug, one can experience her unconditional love. Amma has given this motherly embrace to more than 40 million people throughout the world.
She is known as Her Holiness Sri Mātā Amritānandamayī. But most often known as Amma, she is an Indian Hindu spiritual leader, guru and humanitarian, who is revered as 'the hugging saint' by her followers. She is the chancellor of multi-campus research university Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham.
As we went into the event early in the evening, there were hundreds of people (probably close to 1,000) waiting for her. And they had been there since early afternoon. We were amazed that there were so many people that knew about Amma.
Aunt Bertha, being an elder, was permitted to take a closer seat, and we were allowed to be with her, too. Still the wait was very long. Amma was hugging left and right, and no one wasted any time, or lingered there. I guess Amma knew how to ‘turn it off’ so you knew when to get up and leave.
When it was our turn, Aunt Bertha went first, then me, and then Charles. I had taken a red organic raw silk cloth with me to be blessed. She knew just what to do with it and in 30 seconds, it was empowered with divine healing energy.
I can’t say that I felt any different after the hug, physically. But subconsciously I felt different. I felt like I had done something for myself. And I did. I took a seemingly innocuous event and turned it into a positive healing. As I was hugged, I thought of so many people who could use that healing. I thought of all of mankind. I think that by doing so, there was divine healing energy, going through me from Amma which had been directed from Universal Source to all those who needed and accepted it. Like I was a Conduit of Love.
I took the red cloth home. It was probably a full yard of material. Charles and I decided to cut the fabric into hand sized pieces to give out to friends, family and anyone we came into contact with. So, the conduit of love was still spreading through the fabric.
May the tree of our lives be rooted in the soil of love, may good deeds be the leaves, kind words be the flowers, and peace be the fruit. May the world flourish as one family, united in love. May we thus be able to create a world in which peace and contentment prevail. This is Amma’s sincere prayer.
The Ann Arbor event inspired a center to be established there: M.A. Center Michigan, 4201 Ann Arbor Saline Road, Ann Arbor, MI 48103
Having personally embraced more than 40 million people throughout her life, Amma has directly listened (through love) to more of the world’s people - especially the poor - than anyone else alive today. Each of the projects created through her has been inspired by these conversations.
What a Blessing.

I love this, Melissa! I was an active devotee of Amma's for many years. I was so fortunate that this was during a time when she came to Albuquerque every year. I treasure those memories. I love that you sent out pieces of that cloth to your loved ones. ❤️
